Not so much new going on here. I've been on a roller coaster emotionally, but otherwise in excellent health. Thus far, the only casualty has been my roommate. I thought he was just overly-solicitious, but maybe a bit passive-aggressive, what with the doing my dishes for me occasionally and such ... This morning I asked him if there were any spare light bulbs, since the one over my bed is out. He said no, and he's gone for the weekend, but he'd be happy to change the light bulb on Sunday. (This particular light bulb dangles from a rather low ceiling, directly over my bed, and I could probably reach it without even standing on the bed). So in irate anger at his presumption that I was too incompetent to change a light bulb, I snapped at him.
Oh well.
This comment, from isn't it pretty to think so?, totally cracked me up: "Stay in bed and read fun pregnancy books and plan your nursery instead." Because I clearly don't have any of those p-books from my frequent, stupid questions and in one of my panicked moods yesterday, I was thinking about our poor, tiny little apartment. It happens to be a one-bedroom. A real one-bedroom, not one of those 'convertible' apartments you always read about. To put it another way, when JD and I are both in the apartment we are never more than about 14 feet away from each other, even when I'm in the bathtub and he's in bed (and the living room is between those). The bedroom is probably about 10 feet by 8 feet and the living room is maybe 10 feet by 10 feet at most. The kitchen is a unique-to-New-York-living quarter size oven and half size sink on one wall of the living room. When having guests over for shabbos, I have been known to put an entre in the crockpot, 2 on the warmer, one in the toaster and one in the oven proper and maybe something to stay warm in the rice cooker.
The one major renovation that I plan to do is to stomp my foot until the superintendent gives us a larger freezer. I like our tiny fridge because it is super-environmentally friendly, and my utility bills are usually around $25 (!!!). But the freezer is way too small and if I am eventually going to be pumping and making food for a little person (I'll also be avoiding the b-word for a while) then I need a real-sized freezer. Did I mention that my mini-kitchen has only 4 inches of counter space? It's a bit pitiful.
My current plan, which was conceived of long before our little secret, is to get rid of my desk and the bedside table and try and squeeze a small crib into that space. I would love to have a rocking chair, but the only way that will fit is either if we get rid of the 2-person kitchen table or if we get rid of the couch, in which case JD will have absolutely no place to sit. I honestly considered putting the crib partway into the closet (not all the way, let me be clear) and then putting a rocking chair where my desk was. But then I'll have even less closet space. Let me add, for those of you who are worried that we live in a miserable apartment, that it has 12 foot ceilings and is directly across the street from a beautiful park with a tot lot playground less than 20 feet from the apartment door.
But anyway, what really made me laugh, is that I won't be home until mid-August at the earliest. I'll be back in the U.S. as of mid-May, but traveling until mid-June and then staying with JD 'down South.' I laugh because I think anyone reading my blog objectively would think that we are irresponsible lunatics, but y'all give me the benefit of the doubt that we'll be just like normal people and plan a nursery and find a doctor and stuff. And I'm sure we'll get around to it eventually, in our own way.
