Just not from the wonderbaby. I had been giving JD the benefit of the doubt on whether he actually forcefully kicked me last week as I was sleeping (in the legs, don't worry, I kick to the belly would have got him permanently ousted to the floor. I do have standards). Until, that is, I was sharply awakened by his elbow in my chest at about 4 am.
Given our haphazard, quasi-indigent lifestyle, JD and I have a rather unfortunate addiction to cheap crai.gs.lis.t mattresses. It turns out that this is a subject that people have strong opinions on. I have several friends who say they could never imagine buying a used mattress. I simply don't get that. In my family we switched beds around a lot. And everyone must have slept on a college dorm bed at some point. We definitely buy mattress pads and we use sheets, which seems to me plenty sufficient. And every time I look at the mattress ads the prices make me feel totally overwhelmed.
However, I was extremely lucky in NYC. I purchased a super-high quality, firm, basically unused mattress off cr.aig.s.li.st and enlisted 3 friends to carry it the 2 blocks to my apartment. And I have been sleeping soundly since. JD has not had such good luck. In his last apartment we slept on a full mattress which we less than affectionately referred to as the 'rowboat.' It was very good for snuggling because the mattress was so worn out that there was a large incline towards the center and it was practically impossible to sleep on it without (both of us) sliding into the bottomless pit in the middle. It seems our mattress in City X is starting to resemble the early stages of the rowboat. I actually don't need any pillows to prop my bump because facing out gives me a pretty sharp incline to rest my bump against. But it does mean when JD rolls over he has a tendency to slide into the 'pit' and inadvertently kick/elbow/smoosh me.
[I will admit he was quite snuggly at 4:01 am after I rudely shoved him awake and complained loudly about the elbow to the chest incident.]
Which is all to say, I do sometimes envy the well-established. Those of you with permanent addresses and new mattresses, and I'm definitely going to appreciate the little things about moving back to our mini-apartment in the city.

Doesn't Craig have something new? A rowboat is bad no matter what!
