what's 8 months here or there

According to the manuals, most toddlers ought to have some type of noticeable increase in vocabulary and comprehension around 16 months ... so here we are at 23.9999 months and I think we're almost there. The fusspot has added at least 10 words to her vocabulary in the past 2 weeks and at long, long last she is starting to say those adorably cute things toddlers say. My current favorite is that when I am sitting down (ok, reclining on the couch) and she really wants me to do something she'll grab my finger and say very angrily "Turn on! Turn on!" Her Chinese vocabulary has also taken off and by now far surpassed mine. She and JD can have whole conversations beyond my comprehension, although I am slowly learning the words for pick me up and color and no coat in Chinese.

I have to admit, the huge plus of having left her for 12 days (bad haircut and a week of temper tantrums aside) is the immense confidence boost JD seems to have had in parenting. He was hardly left alone with her (technically for one night, otherwise he always had the help of a grandma/friend/daycare) but he still is much more confident in deciding even the little things like how many layers she should wear and if she's ready for her nap. And when I brought up the long-postponed trip to Asia for work, he told me that he'd told his work he'd rather stay home with us.

I can't believe tomorrow is the big second birthday.

Happy Birthday Fusspot!

LL has gained vocabulary in little fits and starts, too. He'll suddenly gain a bunch of words and I'll think, "Here we go!!!" and then he'll hold steady for a month or two after that. It's weird. And the phrases didn't really come in until somewhere around 2 years as well.
