update: good news

Update: Platelets level normal. It does not appear to be either a clotting disorder or childhood cancer as per this blood draw.

I asked the doctor about anemia and she seemed to think that it was quite impossible. She said he was too young, that the cord was left pulsing for a good 5 minutes and the earliest a full term baby could be anemic was closer to 6 months. She also said that my anemia was not passed on to him in any way.

So for no, all the news is good.

But she was quite clear that we need to photograph every bruise/mark/discoloration and call them immediately.

Such a relief. Your post yesterday was horrifying in its implications. I hope they figure out exactly why the dumpling is bruising so easily, but I'm so relieved that none of the 'worst case scenarios' are proving out. Thinking of you.

Is it possible he was bit by a bug or spider? I know, then he'd have a mark from that, right? My mom had some horrible bruising that wound up be attributed to spider bites, despite no marks. I know, longshot, just trying to help.

I will ask my hubby for ideas, too.

So glad the worst-cases are being ruled out!

not to aound like a complete ass BUT...are the bruises going away? If not, could they be Mongolian spots? Just wondering. LP has a few, and I know many other Chinese children (even those 1/4 Chinese) who have them.

Kermit had a fair amount of bruising early on, too, and he was also very very very slow to clot after blood draws. When he was still bleeding 24 hours after a blood draw, I called the nurse help line. Their normal call-back time is 60-70 minutes, so I totally freaked out when they called back in 2 minutes. BUT, everything was fine. Something about infants and normal bleeding and clears up by 4-6 months. And indeed, he's almost 6 months now, and we've had no more problems.
